A simple and flavorful Southern-style fried cabbage dish made with bacon, onions, and chicken broth.

  • 1 small green cabbage (about 2 pounds), cored and chopped
  • 5 slices bacon, coarsely chopped
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/3 cup chicken broth
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon until crisp. Remove the bacon from the pan using a slotted spoon and allow the bacon fat to remain in the skillet.
  2. Add the onion to the pan. Cook until translucent – about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the cabbage and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes. Add the chicken broth, salt, and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender to your liking. Add the bacon back to the skillet and stir to combine. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • To prevent mushy cabbage, avoid overcooking. Check tenderness frequently.
  • Green cabbage works best for this recipe, but you can also use Savoy cabbage for a milder flavor.
  • Popular additional seasonings include garlic powder, red pepper flakes, or smoked paprika.
  • Bacon adds richness and flavor, but butter can be used as a substitute for a vegetarian version.
