Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (1/2 stick)
  • 1 packet (0.25 oz) active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for filling)
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened (for icing)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for icing)
  • 24 Tbsp milk (for icing)

Instructions

  1. Melt 1/2-stick butter in a microwave-safe bowl for 40-45 seconds. Pour into a medium bowl.
  2. Heat milk in the same bowl for 45 seconds and add to melted butter. Check temperature (100-110°F).
  3. Stir in sugar and yeast until dissolved. Cover and let sit for 10 minutes.
  4. Preheat oven to the lowest setting (170°F).
  5. After 10 minutes, add egg, salt, and vanilla extract to the yeast mixture.
  6. Add flour in 1/2 cup increments, mixing until dough is soft and slightly tacky.
  7. Form dough into a ball, cover, and place in the warm oven (turned off) for 10 minutes.
  8. Prepare filling by mixing softened butter, brown sugar, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla.
  9. Roll dough into a 14″ x 18″ rectangle, spread filling, and roll tightly into a log.
  10. Cut into 12 slices and place in a greased baking dish.
  11. Bake at 350°F for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  12. Let cool for 10 minutes.
  13. Prepare icing by whisking cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until smooth.
  14. Spread icing on warm cinnamon rolls and serve.
