  • 1/3 cup fine dry bread crumbs
  • 1 cup marinara sauce, divided
  • 1/3 cup grated onion
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • shredded fresh basil or chopped fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Gather all ingredients. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Beat the egg lightly in a large bowl. Stir in the bread crumbs.
  3. Add 1/3 cup marinara sauce, the onion, garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and crushed red pepper. Stir to combine.
  4. Add the ground beef. Mix lightly until just combined.
  5. Shape the mixture into six oval patties, each about 4-inches long and 1-inch thick.
  6. Heat the oil in a 12-inch oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat.
  7. Add the patties to the skillet. Cook until browned, about 2 minutes on each side.
  8. Remove the skillet from the heat.
  9. Spoon the remaining 2/3 cup of marinara sauce over the patties.
  10. Top with the shredded mozzarella cheese.
  11. Bake in the skillet until the cheese melts and the patties reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees F (74 degrees C), about 15 minutes.
  12. Garnish with basil or parsley if desired.
