A flavorful twist on the classic sloppy joe, using ground chicken for a lighter option. Packed with Cajun seasoning and topped with your favorite extras.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 sandwiches 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground chicken
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Optional toppings: sliced pickles, shredded cheese, coleslaw

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the diced bell pepper and onion, and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the ground chicken to the skillet. Break it up with a spoon and cook until it’s no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Cajun seasoning, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
  6. Let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
  7. While the chicken simmers, toast the hamburger buns in a separate skillet or toaster until golden brown.
  8. Spoon the Cajun chicken mixture generously onto the bottom halves of the buns.
  9. Add your choice of optional toppings like sliced pickles, shredded cheese, or coleslaw.
  10. Place the top halves of the buns on top.
  11. Serve hot and enjoy.

Notes

  • Use lean ground chicken for a healthier option.
  • Toast the buns to prevent sogginess.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
